The “European Maccabiah Games,” often referred to as the “Jewish Olympics,” will be in Berlin this year. 2,000 jewish athetes are expected.

The federal interior minister Dr. Thomas de Maizière clarified:

I am very glad that these game are taking place in Germany for the first time. Berlin is particularly symbolic in view of the background of National Socialism. In 1936 jewish athletes and athletesses were systematically ostracized (ausgegrenzt) at the Olympic Games happening in Berlin.
